A late 19th century English Victorian Period Davenport desk. Walnut construction with Burl Walnut and contrasting inlaid detail features an upper stationary pen and inkwell compartment with hinged cover and Brass gallery over a hinged writing slope with inset leather, on a base with four dovetailed functioning drawers and four faux drawers opposite, carved upper and lower brackets beside the knee-well, all standing on porcelain castors. Restored finish with good color. 22 x 22 x 34 ½” high overall. This desk owes its name to a Captain Davenport who was the first to commission the design, from Gillows of Lancaster, near the end of the 18th century. In a sense then it could also be considered a campaign desk though there are no records indicating if Captain Davenport was in the British Army or the Royal Navy.
